Join our fun scientific research project!

Misophonia is a condition in which certain sounds provoke strongly negative reactions, such as anger, disgust or hatred. Did you know that 79% of the population has a form of misophonia?  Of these people, 5 to 13% have severe misophonia, in which they experience such a high level of suffering that it impairs normal functioning, experiencing severe difficulties at work, in class, or in social situations. However, there are also milder forms of misophonia, in which certain sounds only provoke some irritation. Or maybe you are someone who does not recognize these types of reactions to sounds at all? For a scientific study on misophonia, conducted within the University of Amsterdam, we are looking for volunteers who:
- Are willing to participate in an experiment in which we measure your reaction to different sounds, including sounds that can be experienced as unpleasant such as smacking.
- Want to participate in a measurement of the pupil using an eye camera (a simple and safe method)
We are particularly interested in people who suffer from irritation due to smacking, breathing, tapping or other specific sounds,  as this study is set up to better understand, and help, people with misophonia. But we do invite you to also participate if you do not have these types of responses!

What does participation entail?
- Completing a short questionnaire about your experiences with sounds.
- A session in our research center in Amsterdam (approximately 1 hour), in which you listen to different sounds while we measure your pupil size using an eye camera.

What do you get in return?
- A compensation of 1 subject hours
- A contribution to scientific research on misophonia, with which we can better understand this condition and treat people with severe misophonia!

This experiment consists of a single session at the Roeterseiland Behavioural Science Lab (BSL). During the experiment you will watch neutral images on the screen, and you will sometimes get an electrical stimulus delivered to the top of your wrist. The stimulus can be experienced as uncomfortable. The intensity of the stimulus will be determined through a build-up procedure. We will also ask you to fill out some questionnaires, and we will take physiological measurements for which we will attach electrodes to the fingers of your left hand. We will also use eye-tracking methods, for which you will be required to keep your head in a head rest for the duration of the experiment. The total duration of the session is approximately 90 minutes.

You can participate if you:
- are between 18 and 45 years old
- are not pregnant
- do not currently use psychoactive mediation (e.g., antidepressants, ADHD medication)
- have not used recreational drugs in the past month (excluding alcohol)
- do not have a current or past diagnosis of depression, anxiety-related disorder or other neuropsychiatric disorder
- have not participated in a fear conditioning experiment in the past 3 months

Intrusions of video games and negative films

Do you want to help us gain insights into what drives intrusive thoughts and memories? In this study we will examine people's intrusions of negative film clips and video games.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

The study involves three in-person sessions (30 minutes to 1 hour each) on 3 consecutive days (24-hours apart) in a lab at the Roeterseiland (REC-L).

In the first experimental session you will fill out several questionnaires and become familiarized with two simple but very popular games, Tetris and Candy Crush. Thereafter, you will watch sets of videos (the videos contain quite graphic or scary scenes, which may be distressing to you!). After each set, we will ask you several questions. Then, in the second sessions you will perform a a computer task and play Tetris and Candy Crush. Finally, during the third and final session you will perform another computer task in the lab.

In between the lab sessions you will be required to record any intrusions (e.g., spontaneous flashbacks/ memories) concerning the films that you watched or video games that you played.

The whole procedure will take approximately 3 hours and you will be compensated with 3 RCs or 30 euros depending on your preference.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

In order to take part, you need to be between 18 and 65 years of age and have a good understanding of English. You are NOT eligible to take part if:

- You are currently receiving, or have recently received, treatment for post-traumatic stress symptoms, including medication, psychological therapy or counselling

- You have a neurological illness (e.g., epilepsy)

- You have significant visual or hearing impairments, or colour blindness

- You are not in the possession of a smartphone

- You have blood phobia

- You have recently (within the past 3 weeks) played Tetris or Candy Crush or were a habitual player in the past

- You are unwilling to stay of any video games for the 3 days of participating in the experiment (from the first session until the end of the third session).

We are looking for participants who have lost a loved one through a break-up or death at least 6 months ago.

When experiencing the loss of a loved one, we often go through a range of emotions. The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is conducting a study on the emotional and physical responses that occur when thinking about loss.

Study Purpose:
We aim to understand how emotions triggered by painful memories, images, or thoughts related to the loss of a loved one affect emotional and physiological states. By participating, you will help us gain a deeper understanding of the emotional processes associated with loss, which can contribute to future treatments and support for people going through similar experiences.

What does participation involve?
•   Two in-person lab sessions and one online follow-up session, with a total participation time of approximately 4 hours.
•   In the lab, you will be asked to shortly focus on specific memories or thoughts related to your loss. Your emotional and physiological responses (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance, facial muscle activity) will be measured.

Compensation:
You can choose to receive either 6 Psychology research credits or €60 as compensation for your participation.

Eligibility Criteria:
You can participate if:
•   You are 16 years or older.
•   You have lost someone through death or experienced the end of a relationship at least 6 months ago.
•   You have not fully processed this loss (to be determined during screening).
•   You are able to experience emotions or tension in your body.

Unfortunately, you cannot participate if:
•   You are currently receiving psychological treatment for this loss.
•   You are currently receiving psychological treatment for other issues unrelated to the loss.
•   You are currently experiencing severe depressive symptoms/emotional distress (to be determined during screening).

To find out if you qualify for the study, you can fill out the screening questionnaires. These will be sent to you after you click 'I want to participate.'

If you do qualify, we will contact you to schedule the sessions for the study.
For any questions, please email: k.e.m.leenen@uva.nl.

Inclusiecriteria:

How do physical activity and mental challenges affect your performance?

Have you ever noticed that your focus sharpens after a burst of exercise or that certain tasks seem easier when you’re mentally alert? In this study, we are exploring how your body responds to mental and physical challenges by increasing your arousal levels through brief exercise on a stationary bike and through challenging cognitive tasks. We want to see how these factors influence your performance and how this is reflected in physiological markers in real time.

During the sessions, you will perform cognitive tasks while we measure your pupil size, heart rate, and respiratory effort — key indicators of how your body adjusts to mental and physical demands. This experiment will help us understand more about how people perform under pressure, with potential insights into how we can optimize focus and performance.

The study lasts around 2.75 hours (session 1: 1.5 hours, session 2: 1.25 hours), and for your participation you'll receive 3 psychology research credits or €27,50.

Inclusion criteria:
- You are between 18 and 30 years old
- You are English speaking (native or non-native speakers allowed)

Exclusion criteria:
- You have uncorrected visual impairments (glasses and soft lenses are allowed, but hard lenses are not)
- You have hearing deficits

If anything is unclear to you, feel free to ask the researcher directly, or contact them through email: s.d.vanmil@uva.nl. The researcher will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

During the study, you will see a rubber hand in front of you while your real hand remains out of sight. Both the rubber hand and your real hand will be brushed simultaneously with a paintbrush. After each session, you will be asked to describe your experiences by filling out a short questionnaire.

How long does it take?
The experiment lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Who can participate?
* You are 18 years or older.
* You have not previously participated in a (similar) Rubber Hand Illusion study.
* You have normal vision and tactile sensation in your hands.
* You have no neurological or psychiatric conditions.
* You are proficient in Dutch or English.

What do you get in return?
* A fascinating experience that provides insight into how your brain perceives your body.
* 1 research credit.

• 1 psychologie-proefpersoonpunt.
