Online onderzoek | 5.25 Psychology Research Credit
Have you ever experienced a particularly stressful event in your life that you are still sometimes struggling with?

We at the Clinical Psychology Department are investigating the impact of social sharing following trauma, that is, we are looking into how sharing your experiences with somebody else in a letter affects you and your well-being.

The study:

If you are eligible to participate, you will be asked to fill out multiple questionnaires regarding potentially stressful or traumatic experiences you may have had and the social support you are receiving. We will ask you to fill out these questionnaires three times within the span of one and a half months. You may also be asked to participate in a writing program throughout which you will write a letter concerning a stressful or traumatic experience to a person you are close to, such as a close friend, family member, or significant other, who was not directly involved in the event you are describing. This letter is supposed to be written over three successive writing sessions, which can be completed online and will last approximately 45 minutes each. If you are selected for this writing program, you will receive more detailed instructions and suggestions for how to write this letter. After you have completed this letter, you will receive our feedback on it and be asked to send this text to this close friend, family member or other person of your choosing.

The compensation:

You will receive 1,5 credits per hour spent on this study. The maximum number of credits which can be earned is 5.25 for participants who are randomly assigned to the writing program, those not assigned to the writing program complete only the questionnaires and can earn up to 1 research credit.

You are eligible to participate if you are …

•   At least 16 years or older
•   Fluent in English
•   Not currently undergoing treatment with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health professional
•   Currently experiencing stress symptoms associated with a past event (to be determined in the recruitment survey, see below)

Not sure if you qualify? Just start the first questionnaire and find out. The initial recruitment survey only takes 15 minutes and if you do not qualify you will still be rewarded 0.25 research credits.

-----Nederlandse tekst-----

• Minimaal 16 jaar of ouder bent

This experiment consists of a single session at the Roeterseiland Behavioural Science Lab (BSL). During the experiment you will watch neutral images on the screen, and you will sometimes get an electrical stimulus delivered to the top of your wrist. The stimulus can be experienced as uncomfortable. The intensity of the stimulus will be determined through a build-up procedure. We will also ask you to fill out some questionnaires, and we will take physiological measurements for which we will attach electrodes to the fingers of your left hand. We will also use eye-tracking methods, for which you will be required to keep your head in a head rest for the duration of the experiment. The total duration of the session is approximately 90 minutes.

You can participate if you:
- are between 18 and 45 years old
- are not pregnant
- do not currently use psychoactive mediation (e.g., antidepressants, ADHD medication)
- have not used recreational drugs in the past month (excluding alcohol)

How does physical activity affect your performance? Contribute to science and stay in shape at the same time.

Have you ever noticed that your focus sharpens after exercising? In this study, we are exploring how your body responds to physical challenges by increasing your arousal levels through continuous exercise on a stationary bike and through challenging cognitive tasks. We want to see how these factors influence your performance and how this is reflected in physiological markers in real time.

During the session, you will perform an auditory task whist you are cycling on a hometrainer - with a very light / light intensity. We will continuously measure your pupil size, heart rate, and respiratory effort — key indicators of how your body adjusts to mental and physical demands. This experiment will help us understand more about how people perform under pressure, with potential insights into how we can optimize focus and performance.

The study lasts around 2.75 hours (session 1: 1.5 hours, session 2: 1.25 hours), and for your participation, you’ll receive 3.0 psychology research credits.

Inclusion criteria:
- You are between 18 and 30 years old
- You are English speaking (native or non-native speakers allowed)

Exclusion criteria:
- You have health conditions that would impede you from performing very light / light intensity exercise for an extended period of time (50 minutes)
- You have uncorrected visual impairments (glasses and soft lenses are allowed, but hard lenses are not)
- You have hearing deficits

Please note, you will be cycling on a hometrainer for about 50 minutes in total, so please be sure you are comfortable with this exercise duration before signing up.

If anything is unclear, feel free to ask the researcher directly, or contact them through email: s.d.vanmil@uva.nl. The researcher will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

A neuroscience study for roommates only — Earn €30\€20 for a 2-hour session
Are you an empathetic person? Do you ever feel like you and your roommate are more in sync than you realize?
We at the Social Brain Lab (NIN) have decided to explore how people physically and emotionally respond to each other in shared experiences. We're especially interested in how roommates connect beyond the rent into the emotional realm.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
• Same biological sex-identifying pairs, aged 18–35
  • Roommates for at least six months
  • No clinical conditions (e.g., epilepsy, heart problems, or strong sensitivity to stimulation)

WHAT'S INVOLVED:
A 2-hour session in our lab, together with your roommate:
In the first block of the experiment, one of you will experience a short series of mild, safe sensory stimulations that are fully calibrated to your personal threshold. You’ll have full control over the intensity, which will be adjusted to feel uncomfortable but never too painful. The other will observe and rate your reactions while we record natural physiological responses in both of you, such as:
   - Heart rate
   - Skin conductance
   - Respiration
   - Pupil size (with wireless glasses)
   - Facial muscle activity

In the second block, you will switch the role. You’ll also complete a brief interpersonal distance task to explore whether shared experiences can subtly shift how close you feel to your roommate. Finally, you’ll fill out a few short questionnaires about emotions, empathy, and your interpersonal connection.

WHAT YOU GET:
• €30\€20 per person
• A unique opportunity to contribute to neuroscience research
• Insight into how humans connect on a physiological and emotional level

HOW TO JOIN
• Make sure to register for the same time slot as your roommate — participation requires both of you!

ENGLISH:
Would you like to earn 6.75 Psychology Research Credits or 67.50 euros? Are you interested in finding out more about your imagination? Look no further and participate in this study! We are currently looking for physically and mentally healthy participants between the age of 18 and 35. The goal of this study is to assess how well people can script vivid stories using a variety of stimuli. You will be presented with various combinations of pictures and sounds, which you will use as the ingredients for your personally imagined events.

The study will take place over three sessions, scheduled on three consecutive days. However, please note that we can only determine after session 1 whether you can continue your participation in sessions 2 and 3. We cannot disclose the reasons for ending your participation after session 1. If you cannot continue after session 1, we will inform you at the end of the session and reimburse you for your participation in the first session. All sessions take 1,5 hours each (4.5 hours in total). During all sessions, you will have to perform an imagination task on the computer. After signing up, you will receive an e-mail containing an informed consent form and a screener to check whether you are eligible to participate. Filling in the screener will only take 3 minutes. If you meet the criteria, we will call you to ask some additional questions and, if you turn out to be eligible, schedule the three lab sessions.

WARNING: this study makes use of aversive emotional images and sounds that can be experienced as emotionally burdening.

DUTCH:

Elke sessie duurt 1,5 uur (4,5 uur in totaal).

Online onderzoek | 1.50 Communication Science Research Credit
Just like some people love to rewatch their favourite TV show or listen to their favourite song on repeat, games have the potential to draw us in again and again. The goal of this study is to form a clearer understanding of why some players prefer to replay narrative-based video games.

To participate in this study, you must be at least 16 years of age and have experience playing video games for fun. There are no other criteria for being included in this study.

This online study requires your participation at two different time points, separated by a one-week delay. During session one, you will answer questions about yourself, your experience with video games, and your general orientation to certain experiences. Then, you will play a short game that we have chosen for you. After, you will answer some questions about your experiences playing the game. About one week later, we will send you a notification (and reminders, if necessary) that you can log in again to the FMG research lab website. During session two, we will just ask you to play the game again for a short time, and answer some more questions about your experiences. Both parts of this study take place entirely online.

In total, the study requires approximately 1.5 hours to complete (Session 1: 1 hour, Session 2: 30 minutes). You can be compensated in the form of 1.5 Communication Science research credits (session 1: 1 RC, session 2: .5 RC) for your participation in this study.

For questions, please contact the researcher, Dr. Koji Yoshimura, k.b.yoshimura@uva.nl.
